Tinc moltes preguntes i pocas repostes.

In El quadern gris Josep Pla writes under the date of the 22 of November (1918):

. . . Love for the truth can be compatible with the most repugnant personal obsession. Freedom of thought, antidogmatism, can nest in the most roguish temperament; the lowest hypocrisy, in the most gifted man; the most sought after social conditions, in a dangerous environment; poetic grace or the gift of objectivity, in a perverse monster. The rising of the Renaissance.

In the leanest times—list this one if we exclude scientific investigation--, the index of values is very distinct. Everything is exterior. Appearance is a tyrant. The pleasure of the sign is universal. In order to feel alive we have to resort to a reading of alien virtues, of wounds and lesions of others. Only the opinion they have of you is valid. The path is the universal touchstone. Age of masks.

I have heard that this attitude doesn’t begin until after the Second World War. Do we live in an age of masks? Is the fact that Joseph Pla placed this idea during the First World War another mask? If it is, what was his reason for doing it? Does truth depend on the opinions of other people? That is, is truth only a façade? I have many questions and few answers.
